Elevating the Basic Denim Uniform

There was an article that sparked a lot of chatter published last month in The CUT. The article is  titled “It Must be Nice to Be a West Village Girl”, written by Brock Coylar, a features writer at New York. When you have the time, find the article and read it for yourself. It is a very thought provoking piece about the transformation of the West Village in New York, by non-native young women living out their New York fantasy.

While reading, it was explicitly stated that there was almost a cult-like mentality these women had. Almost like a hive mind, they all looked the same. Like a copy and paste of each other with hardly any differentiation. They are usually dressed in their basic uniform, a white tank/tee paired with jeans. Take a look at the photo below.

We might just be in an individuality drought. Everyone is looking at the same things, buying the same things, and therefore wearing the exact same things.

The point of the white tee + denim combo is to have a casual and simple go to look. I want to teach you how to elevate this basic uniform by infusing personality into it. Stay casual and express some individuality at the same time.

Here's how to do it.

Elevate the white or plain tee with a graphic tee and don’t forget to accessorize. There is so much power in accessorizing. Toss on a silk scarf or a headband that ties in with your shirt. Also, It’s summertime. Play around with colorful and eclectic jewelry!

This is my favorite part. Elevate the denim. Denim can be fun!

Finish it off with any type of shoe, depending on what your activities are for the day. Think outside the box, for your own benefit. Your individuality is your superpower.
